The Ethics Lab (Expanded) with a Deferred Quarter Suspension is an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their commitment to their education, their willingness to learn and change their academic strategies for success, and their ability to positively contribute to the UC San Diego community.
The Ethics Lab (Expanded) continues beyond the Ethics Lab (Core) through the entire quarter (requiring about 12 hours of commitment) and provides many opportunities for personal and professional growth while developing valuable lifelong skills. When students pass the program, they are eligible to have their Quarter Suspension cancelled.
Throughout the program, Peer Mentors guide students in
The link to enroll in the Ethics Lab (Expanded) will be given to you after you've completed the Reflect & Prep Module in the After Education Canvas Course.
Ethics Lab (Expanded) is structured as a Pass/ No Pass program with attendance, participation, and engagement being the primary measures of successful completion. Showing up on time to each meeting, completing learning activities by the given deadlines, and thoughtfully engaging, reflecting, and sharing during each meeting are all factors considered when assessing a student’s progress. Students who strive to adhere to these guidelines and get the most out of Ethics Lab (Expanded) should have no problem passing successfully.
The Ethics Lab (Expanded) starts in Week 2 and continues at the same day/time once/week (for 50 minutes) through the rest of the quarter. In total, you'll be committing about 10-15 hours of time to learn and grow through the Ethics Lab.
No, the Ethics Lab is designed to be an in-person learning experience with a prioritization on human-to-human, authentic engagement and mentoring opportunities. So, it only takes place in person at Pepper Canyon Hall on the day and time you signed up for.
We have designed the Ethics Lab to be an engaging, human-to-human, learning environment in which students benefit from interacting with each other, their Peer Mentor and the Instructor. If you are late to or miss a class, or come to class unprepared, you not only negatively impact your own learning, but that of your fellow classmates.
Therefore we ask that you:
If an emergency arises that prevents you from attending your section on time or prepared, please email aio@ucsd.edu as soon as possible.
No.
Why?
We don't believe that GenAI tools, like ChatGPT for example, will help you learn and learning is our hope for you.
All of the learning activities - completed in and outside of class - are designed to help you reflect on and experience meaningful learning from your past experiences and to develop and practice tools to handle difficult ethical situations in the future.
That means that the activities are about YOU - what you think, how you're feeling, what you know and what you don't (yet) know. And, we only care about you and your thoughtful engagement in the learning. We don't care about "perfection" or "good writing". We don't care what Grammarly or ChatGPT says you should think or sound like.
Having said that, if you'd like to suggest how GenAI would help facilitate (rather than hinder) your learning in the Ethics Lab, please let us know (see the Canvas Module for more information).
We'll tell you!
No later than 1 week after you've submitted your final learning activity, we'll send you a congratulations email and let you know that your Quarter Suspension has been cancelled.
