After Education Program
The Academic Integrity Office (AIO) believes that all humans make mistakes and that mistakes offer us an opportunity to learn and grow (personally and professionally). Academic Integrity violations are no different, and that is why we developed our After Education Program. This Program offer a space for students to reflect on and grow from their experience so that they can bounce forward in a way that helps them live according to their core values and act ethically when the situation calls for it.
Our Instructors and Peer Mentors facilitate opportunities to process the integrity violation and to develop life-long skills and knowledge that will benefit our students throughout their time at UC San Diego and beyond.
Reflect & Prep Module
Learning after a mistake starts with reflection. So, all students (except those who have been dismissed) complete Module 1, which includes a written reflection exercise as well as a 1:1 conversation with a Peer Mentor who will provide guidance on the next steps in the After Education Program and/or for preparing for a time of separation from the University (if the student has been suspended).
The Reflect & Prep Module includes:
Pre-Assessment
The Pre-Assessment is a survey that takes approximately 20-minutes to complete, the point of which is to provide the student with some reflection time but also some baseline understandings of the topics we'll cover in After-Education.
Telling Your Story (TYS) Assignment
The TYS is written as a letter to someone you respect or admire. Writing this gives you the space and opportunity to reflect on the situation and the factors that led to it. It will also allow you to start thinking about what you could have been done differently and to think about and ask questions about your violation or the future impact of the violation.
Peer Mentor 1:1 Consultation
In this consultation, you will review and discuss your TYS and receive an orientation to either your After Education Modules or to your Suspension. Students have found that these consultations help them process everything that's going on and alleviate worries about what lies ahead.
After Education Modules
After you complete the Reflect & Prep Module, you'll move on to any other After Education Modules you've been assigned (per your sanction letter).
Almost all students, at least for a first violation, are assigned to:
Students will be invited to also take, if they choose, any of the following:
- Collaborating with Integrity Module
- Strategies & Tools to Prevent Plagiarism Module
- Critical AI Literacy Module
After Education FAQs
How do I know which After Education Programs to take?
You should refer to your sanction letter for details on which After Education Modules have been assigned to you (received via email from aio@ucsd.edu). Make sure to save a copy of your sanction letter because the link will eventually expire.
I can’t open my sanction letter anymore. What should I do?
If the link to access your sanction letter has expired, please email aio@ucsd.edu and we will resend your letter.
Where do I get started?
You will be added to our After Education Canvas Course within two business days of your sanction letter being sent. You must accept the Canvas invitation to access the site.
You will start with Reflect & Prep Module and then continue with the modules (e.g., Ethics Lab Prep, Ethics Lab (Core), Ethics Lab (Expanded), etc) that you have been assigned assigned to you as detailed in your sanction letter.
When do I need to complete these things by?
Your deadline can be found in your sanction letter. For the Reflect & Prep Module, it is typically 10 business days after the letter has been sent. For any other Modules, the deadline is usually at the end of the next quarter. But, don't delay in getting started because all After Education Modules start in Week 2! So, for example, if you're assigned a December 13, 2025 deadline for Ethics Lab (Core), you can't wait to start it in, say, Week 6. You must start it in Week 2 to finish it on time.
I already did the "AI Training/Suspension Prep" on the old AI Training Canvas Course, do I have to do it again?
Because there are changes to the After-Education Program, you will need to schedule and attend the Peer Mentor 1:1 Consultation (even if you already previously completed one). You do not need to redo your TYS, but you will need to “unlock” Module 1: Getting Started by clicking on and through each page of the and scheduling a new 1:1. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click on “Acknowledgement” in the Module
- Scroll to the bottom where you see a “next” button and click on it.
- On the following page, do the same thing: scroll to the bottom and click “next.”
- Do this for all four pages and the other modules should unlock for you. You will then be able to access training materials for any assigned educational requirements that you have yet to complete.
Can I enroll in the Ethics Lab (Core or Expanded) before I’ve completed the Getting Started Module?
Your Reflect & Prep Module must be completed before you can begin any other assigned After-Education modules. "Completed", for this purpose, means that you have submitted your TYS and scheduled your Peer Mentor 1:1 Consultation. Then, you can enroll in a section of the Ethics Lab. Please note that your enrollment may be cancelled if you don't complete that Peer Mentor 1:1 Consultation as scheduled.
I can't seem to enroll in an Ethics Lab section that works for me! What should I do?
Enrollment closes on our scheduling system 48 hours before the start of the Ethics Lab section. If you have missed the enrollment window and/or you can't find a section that works for your class schedule, please email us at aio@ucsd.edu. If seats are still available, we will be able to help you enroll.
Do I need to complete my assigned After Education modules while suspended?
You can only complete the Ethics Lab if you can attend the meetings in-person.
If you are unable to attend or would prefer to wait until you have returned to UCSD to complete your After Education Program BUT you need the completion deadline(s) extended, please email us at aio@ucsd.edu. If you do not plan to return to UCSD after your suspension is completed, please email us at aio@ucsd.edu.
