Academic Integrity Violation Appeals
Understanding Your Appeal Options
This page outlines the available appeal options for students who have accepted responsibility or have been found responsible for violating UC San Diego's academic integrity standards. Per the UC San Diego Academic Integrity Policy, only one appeal per type may be submitted to the Appeal Appropriate Administrative Authority (Appeal AAA).
Types of Appeals
Administrative Sanction Appeals
- Applicable only when suspended or dismissed; cannot appeal AI Training
- Grounds for appeal are that sanctions are out-of-life with sanctioning guidelines.
- Must be submitted within 10 business days of receiving the sanction letter.
Students appealing sanctions should review the sanction appeal guidance.
Academic Integrity Review Board Decision Appeal
- Appeal decisions made by the Appeal Appropriate Administrative Authority (Appeal AAA)
- Grounds for appeal include:
- The stated procedures were not followed.
- There exists newly discovered important evidence that has substantial bearing on the determination of the Review Panel
- Must be submitted within 10 business days of receiving the decision notice
Students appealing their AIRB Decision should review the AIRB decision appeal guidance.
Academic Sanction Appeal
- For students disputing the grade received due to reasons other than the academic integrity violation (e.g., discrimination)
- Follows the regular grade appeal process, which is not processed under the Academic Integrity Policy.
Failure to Respond Appeal
- Available for students who fail to respond to a step in the process due to extenuating circumstances.
- Must be submitted within 30 business days of receiving the sanction letter.
- Evaluated by the Academic Integrity Office (AIO), and the AIO decision is final.
Students appealing should complete the Failure to Respond appeal form.
Students needing support in writing their appeals can contact the AS Office of Student Advocacy at asadvocacy@ucsd.edu.
Students needing a timeline extension to write and submit their appeal can request a timeline extension at least 10 business days before the appeal is due.
Important Considerations
- Appeals must align with the specific type outlined in the Academic Integrity Policy and Procedures.
- Appeals should address the grounds specified in the policy for each type.
- Adhering to the designated timelines is crucial for a smooth appeals process.
